Overdraft Processing

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyway.** Kitsap Bank pays overdrafts at our discretion; we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined. The types of transactions we may authorize and pay for your account are as follows:

Checks and other transactions made using your checking account number Automatic bill payments (ACH) Recurring check card transactions you have previously authorized

However, we do not authorize and pay overdrafts for Point of Sale (POS) transactions, everyday check card transactions, and ATM withdrawals unless you ask us to. If you would like to authorize Kitsap Bank to pay overdrafts on your check card transactions and ATM transactions, you may opt in, call our Customer Service Center at 800-283-5537, or visit your  local Kitsap Bank branch.

*Overdraft payment will be extended based upon your specific account activity and history. Overdraft payment is a discretionary service, and NOT an actual or implied contract or agreement with Kitsap Bank, it may be withdrawn at any time without notice, at the sole discretion of the bank.
**Overdrafts are charged a fee of $34.00 per item. We do not charge for overdrafts totaling less than $5.00 on a single day. You can be charged for no more than five overdraft fees in a day for overdrafts paid by Kitsap Bank. A fee is assessed for every NSF returned item presented.
Alternative Overdraft Protection

Kitsap Bank offers overdraft protection which may be less expensive than our standard overdraft practices.

Item Payment Order

The order in which items are paid is important if there is not enough money in your account to pay all of the items that are presented. The payment order can affect the number of items overdrawn or returned unpaid and the amount of the fees you may have to pay.

Payment order of items

Our general policy is to process phone, online, and other banking transfers first, in real time as they occur on the day they are processed.

We process in-person withdrawals and cashed checks 2nd, in check number order for the day on which they are processed.

We process ATM withdrawals 3rd, by dollar amount – smallest to largest on the day they are processed.

We process checks you have written that were deposited at a Kitsap Bank branch 4th, in check number order for the day on which they are processed.

We process POS debit card transactions 5th, by dollar amount – smallest to largest on the day they are processed.

We process VISA POS debit card transactions 6th, by dollar amount – smallest to largest on the day they are processed.

We process other checks you have written and similar items 7th, in check number order for the day on which they are processed.

We process ACH transactions and bill payment items 8th, by dollar amount – smallest to largest on the day they are processed. We process bill pay transactions differently depending on whether the receiver accepts ACH payments. If the receiver accepts ACH payments, bill pay transactions are processed the same as other ACH transactions. If not, a check is issued.

We process electronic checks and similar items 9th, in check number order for the day on which they are processed.

On ATM and debit card purchases, a temporary hold may be placed on your account at the time of the transaction for a specified sum of money which can affect the amount available for other payments.
